Everything you Need to Know: The Kungsleden

Updated: Jul 26, 2024

Nestled in the heart of Sweden, the Kungsleden, or "King's Trail," is a hiking path that stretches over 440 kilometers from Abisko in the north to Hemavan in the south. Known for its stunning natural beauty and diverse landscapes, the Kungsleden is a bucket-list adventure for trekkers worldwide.

I would like to acknowledge that the Kungsleden in on the land of the Sámi.

The best time to hike the Kungsleden is from late June to early September. During this period, the trail is free from snow, and the weather is relatively mild. However, be prepared for the notorious Scandinavian mosquitoes in the early summer.

The Trail

  • Arriving in Hemavan

I started hiking right away when I arrived in Hemavan and camped on the trail. If you decide to stay in Hemavan for the night, here are your option:

  • Hemavan to Ammarnäs

This segment of the trail is characterized by rolling hills and picturesque valleys. As you progress, the terrain becomes more rugged, providing a taste of the adventure ahead. The trek to Ammarnäs is about 78 kilometers and typically takes four to five days. Along the way, you'll pass through the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve, one of Europe’s largest protected areas. Here, the landscape transforms into expansive wetlands and alpine plateaus, offering a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

Camp or stay at the Ammarnäs Wärdshus when you arrive.

  • Ammarnäs to Kvikkjokk: Crossing the Arctic Circle

Leaving Ammarnäs, the trail leads you northward into increasingly remote and wild territories. This section, spanning approximately 127 kilometers to Kvikkjokk, takes you across the Arctic Circle. The sense of isolation here is profound, with endless skies, pristine rivers, and the occasional reindeer herd as your only companions.

Kvikkjokk marks the midway point of the Kungsleden. It’s a tiny village where you can rest, resupply, and possibly encounter other hikers. The Kvikkjokk Fjällstation offers a cozy respite before you head back into the wilderness.

Camp or stay at the Kvikkjokk Fjällstation.

There is a very small shop in the station, but I would recommend sending a package there.

  • Kvikkjokk to Saltoluokta: Into the Heart of Lapland

One of the highlights of the Kungsleden is the section from Kvikkjokk to Saltoluokta, approximately 70 kilometers. This part of the trail skirts the edge of Sarek National Park, known for its dramatic peaks and deep valleys. Sarek is often referred to as Europe’s last true wilderness, and its untouched beauty is a hiker’s dream.

Arriving in Saltoluokta, hikers find a historic mountain station that has been welcoming adventurers since 1912. It’s an ideal place to rejuvenate, with hearty meals and traditional Swedish hospitality.

  • Saltoluokta to Abisko: The Final Stretch

Here, will have to take the bus to Vakkotavare.

The journey from Saltoluokta to Abisko, about 107 kilometers, includes some of the most challenging yet rewarding parts of the Kungsleden. Notably, the Tjäktja Pass is the highest point on the trail at 1,150 meters. The panoramic views from the pass are breathtaking, with vast expanses of tundra and glistening lakes.

As you approach Abisko, the landscape changes once more, transitioning into the lush greenery of Abisko National Park. The trail ends at the Abisko Turiststation, a place famed for its midnight sun in summer and Northern Lights in winter.

Hiking the Kungsleden from south to north is a transformative experience. The trail offers a unique blend of solitude, natural beauty, and the chance to disconnect from the modern world. Whether you're an experienced trekker or a novice adventurer, the Kungsleden promises a journey of a lifetime.

Transportation To and From the Trail

You can fly easily to and from the trail.

Smaller airlines offer flights to Hemavan and Kiruna from Stockholm. From Kiruna, you will have to take a bus or train to Abisko.

Another option is to take the train from Stockholm.

It is also possible to reach the trail via bus or train at different points including Jäkvik, Kvikkjokk, Saltoluokta and Vakkotavare.

Enjoy a trail <3
